Making a welcome return to the Lakeside to support the release of their new album Peeper (Leaf Label) Polar Bear are a young London based avant-garde jazz combo led from the back, by the outstanding Seb Rochford. They are part of long great jazz tradition of drummer led bands stretching back through Art Blakey and Chick Webb. Drummer in the Hendrix inspired jazzers Acoustic Ladyland Seb Rochford has played and recorded with a remarkably diverse range of people including Joanna McGregor, Adele, Brian Eno, David Byrne, Patti Smith and Yoko Ono. He also drummed in an early incarnation of Pete Doherty's Babyshambles playing on their first single. Their sound appeals as much to jazz traditionalists as to those people who don't normally do jazz. Polar Bear transcend genres creating a new form of British jazz that is uniquely their own and reflects UK music and life in the twenty first century. Featuring Seb Rochford (drums); Pete Wareham (tenor saxophone); Mark Lockheart (tenor saxophone); Tom Herbert (double bass) and Leafcutter John (mandolin and electronics). "Here's something worth your time. Polar Bear are a significant ripple in the new wave of youthful, post-jazz". Independent on Sunday "This is not nu jazz, acid jazz, Jamie jazz, Parky jazz, Brit jazz, beardo jazz, post-jazz or twee jazz. It's dream jazz." Observer Music Monthly "The big-hitters of the current new wave.” Independent On Sunday "Polar Bear blast out of the past, full of straight, cool school skills, and detonate the past, bursting with edgy, forward-looking lust." Observer Music Monthly

Two years in the making, “Under Ubi’s Tree” captures a musical landscape rich in colour and atmosphere reflecting the sounds and traditions absorbed during Nathan’s travels through Africa, Australasia, Finland and the UK. Noted for her mesmerizing and captivating vocal improvisations and vocalese lyrics to instrumental solos, Anita Wardell is a musician who uses the voice as her instrument, displaying precision and agility, mixed with heartfelt emotion. “Kinda Blue", her most recent album for Proper Records shows Anita’s versatility and complete command of her instrument. Anita received the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best of Jazz category in 2006. This coupled with the release of “Kinda Blue” are now propelling Anita into the major artist arena. Bebop pioneer Mark Murphy proclaimed Anita, "a gift from Australia", adding "what hits me, is how expressive her ballad singing is. Then she has the courage to scat a ballad or two, not unlike a young lady disciple of the Ben Webster school." "Anita Wardell is a singer who takes no prisoners. The Australian vocalist is an uncompromising exponent of bebop and has won a cult following among her colleagues in London during her time here. Think of her, if you like, as the female equivalent of Mark Murphy." The Times "Anita Wardell...is currently one of the most exciting and original exponents of the art of vocal improvisation." Sheffield Telegraph “…the most creative jazz singer operating in London, this sweet toned Australian chooses superior songs and can improvise with the best." Evening Standard
ADRIANO ADEWALE with special guests University of Essex Artist in Residence Adriano Adewale will be joined by two special guests: fellow Brazilian composer and multi instrumentalist Marcelo Andrade and composer and guitarist Jonathan Preiss (Cartinga). Together they will perform a special concert exploring the work of 20th century Afro-Brazilian composer Pixinguinha. Living in Rio de Janeiro, Pixinguinha’s compositions were mainly in a style known as Chorinho and he was one of the first composers to incorporate Jazz and Improvisation in Brazilian music. Chorinho has many similarities to Baroque music, but with a distinctly Brazilian rhythm and flavour. Passionate, virtuoso, challenging, charming and fun, this concert will communicate the essence of Brazilian music and be a taster of the Brazilian Cultural Festival which Adriano will be curating as part of his residency at the Lakeside in May 2010. Featuring Adriano Adewale (percussion/xylophone), Marcelo Andrade (Flutes and Sax) and Jonathan Preiss (7 string acoustic guitar). “…a fabulous range of sounds and rhythms reminiscent of the great Airto Moreira’s magic but with a personality of its own.” The Herald, Edinburgh www.adrianoadewale.co.uk
Mercury/MOBO award-winning saxophone colossus Denys Baptiste is an exceptionally gifted composer, adept at drawing audiences in and taking them on enthralling musical journeys. Melodic, free-flowing, contemporary compositions emerge from the continuous metamorphosis of the artist’s thoughts providing the perfect setting for the fiery solo improvisations, and tight ensemble playing of this formidable, highly intuitive band.
Here Baptiste returns to classic quartet format, presenting a new set which is by far his most progressive to date and yet which remains entirely accessible, referencing the many cultural impressions and expressions of Europe, North America and the Caribbean which have come to define him. Featuring Denys Baptiste (tenor/soprano saxophones); Andrew McCormack (piano); Gary Crosby (double bass); Rod Youngs (drums). “Incandescent.” The Guardian “Quite magnificent.” BBC Music Magazine “Baptiste secures his place in a distinguished line of African and African-Caribbean musicians crucial to the evolution of British jazz since the 1950s.” Downbeat www.denysbaptiste.com ALL GIGS Booking information: Ticket Hotline: 01206 573948 Book Online: www.mercurytheatre.co.uk/artson5 In person: University Gallery Monday – Friday 11 – 5, Saturday 12 – 4 Tickets Full: £10.00, Concs: £7.00 2010 Dates for your Diary Brazilian Cultural Festival Songs from a Hotel Bedroom
