All the members have been classically trained but have also submerged themselves in the jazz tradition. Throughout their existence Basquiat Strings have been developing their own programme, using compositions of Ben Davis and well known jazz player/composers, through rehearsal, "jamming", and performance. In February2007 they released their debut album "Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford on F-IRE which was nominated for the Nationwide Mercury Prize for Album of the Year 2007. "The mounting drama and daredevil spirit affiliate it to jazz rather than classical, even without Seb Rochford's deft drumwork. The end result is exhilarating: imagine a gut-strung Weather Report."
